About Dr. Ma

Summary

With
Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Dr. Ma did postdoctoral researches at University of California, Irvine and University of Toronto. He was also an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow at University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. During the past over 15 years, Dr. Ma has been working on synthesis of  fine organic compounds and development of drug products and analytical methods in Canadian chemical and pharmaceutical companies . Additionally, Dr. Ma has been enjoying working as a Professor instructing at both University and High School  levels. He instructed undergraduate Organic Chemistry course at University of New Brunswick, and Advanced HPLC Method Development, HPLC Method Validation, and Documentation and Compliance courses at Seneca College, and has also been instructing General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physics courses for over 10 years.

Brief Biography

Dr. George Ma is the founder of the MPC Education Center. Realizing the importance of high school and university study in a student's life, Dr. Ma has designed specific courses with his extensive scientific knowledge and experience in chemical research and university/high school teaching over the past ten years, to help the students enhance their academic performance through one-on-one or small group instructing sessions. His programs provide an effective method to not just improve students' grades significantly, but also to challenge students to develop deeper understandings of the scientific concepts and skills offered in traditional schools, and to motivate students to achieve or exceed their education goals.

With his expertise Dr. Ma offers university courses of Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Organic Synthesis and Physics, as well as high school courses of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics (Grades 11-12). He also provides test preparation courses to help university students prepare for a variety of professional examinations such as MCAT, DAT, OAT and PCAT, and high school students prepare for SAT, IB and AP. His students are from many universities such as UofT, York University, McMaster University, University of Western Ontario, and even from Harvard University, and major GTA private schools such as UTS, UCC, Havergal, St. Michael's, Branksome Hall and Crescent School, and public schools such as Richmond Hill High School and A.Y. Jackson Secondary School. All his students have benefited from his instruction and the learning materials he designed, and improved their grades significantly. Numerous students entered top universities in US (e.g., 6-year Penn State's Accelerated Premedical-Medical Program with B.S./M.D.) and Canada, and many of them have become doctors, dentists, and engineers.

In 1991, Dr. Ma received his Ph.D. from Acadimia Sinica in Synthetic Organic Chemistry with 10 papers published in the USA in the well-known journals such as Journal of Organic Chemistry. In the same year Dr. Ma joined Professor F. Freeman's laboratory at the University of California, Irvine to perform his postdoctoral research. In 1992 he was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt fellowship and was invited to work on research projects designed by himself in the laboratory of Professor Manfred Regitz, former editor-in-chief of Synthesis, at the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany. Two years later he came to Canada and became a Professor at the University of New Brunswick in St. John, where he taught undergraduate Organic Chemistry and worked on his research projects. He moved to Toronto in 1995 and conducted research on enzyme-catalyzed organic reactions in Professor J. B. Jones' laboratory at the University of Toronto. In 1996 Dr. Ma joined Dalton Chemical Laboratories Inc. in Toronto and worked for over seven years in the following positions, Senior Chemist, Principal Scientist, Group Leader and Lab Operations Chairman. Currently he is working as a Scientific Leader at Canada's largest pharmaceutical company in Toronto.

Over the past 26 years, Dr. Ma has done significant research work and gained extensive knowledge and experience in both academic and industrial areas. He is an expert in the field of Organic Synthesis and Pharmaceutical Product Development, including natural product isolation and synthesis, phosphorus and organometallic chemistry, amino acids and peptides, HPLC analysis and the identification of impurities in drug substance and drug products. For example, he has synthesized steroids, geosmin, hypericin, sodium azidothymidine 5'-hydrogenephosphonate, misoprostol (a gastric antisecretory and antiulcer drug), peptides and computer-designed drug candidate compounds. He has isolated many natural products from herbs such as feverfew, ginger, valerian and St. John's wort. Instruments he has used for identification and quantification of these compounds include HPLC, GC, IR, UV, NMR (H-1, C-13, COSY, P-31 NMR with variable pulse and temperature), and Mass Spectrum. In the pharmaceutical industry, he has developed numerous HPLC methods for assay and related compound analysis. He uses his compendia and regulatory knowledge to establish and justify controlling limits for related compounds of different drugs and has made a significant contribution in pharmaceutical product development.

In addition to his busy career in chemical/pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Ma also enjoys teaching at both university and high school levels at MPC Education Centre. In the past 10 years he has taught a large variety of age groups and subjects. He has achieved significant success in his teaching endeavors, this is not only due to his experience as a university professor, but also to his early teaching experience as a high school teacher for grades 11 and 12 chemistry courses. Dr. Ma is currently teaching courses of Advanced HPLC Method Development,  HPLC Method Validation, and Documentation and Compliance at Seneca College.

He is a devoted professor with a goal of exceeding students' education requirements. He has designed the courses and provides thousands of PowerPoint slides to allow students to master the knowledge. He offers students encouragement, individualized attention, expertise understanding scientific principles, and helps students catch the important points quickly. He is a friendly, caring, patient and dedicated instructor who has an undeniable passion for teaching and mentoring students. In the classroom, he supplies highly effective teaching methods while creating a fun and engaging atmosphere for students. All of his sessions are highly interactive and personalized. Dr. Ma is able to help students of any academic background improve their grades, succeed at challenging tests, enter into university, and achieve their goals.

We look forward to helping you succeed!
